County Public Health Rabies Reporting
Animal control isn't the only agency with a record of your bite. California regulations require anyone with knowledge of an animal bite — especially treating doctors — to report it to the local health officer. That means your county's public health department often holds a bite report even when animal control was never called. These are the departments that track bites and rabies exposure in Southern California:
Los Angeles County
LA County Department of Public Health — Veterinary Public Health — publichealth.lacounty.gov/vet/
Receives animal bite reports countywide; doctors who treat bites must report here. Pasadena and Long Beach have their own city health departments that handle bites locally.
Orange County
OC Health Care Agency — Communicable Disease Control — ochealthinfo.com
Tracks reported animal bites and rabies exposures for Orange County.
Riverside County
Riverside University Health System — Public Health — ruhealth.org
Handles countywide rabies control records alongside the Department of Animal Services.
San Bernardino County
San Bernardino County Department of Public Health — dph.sbcounty.gov
Animal Care is a program of this department, so bite reporting and rabies control are unified here.
San Diego County
San Diego County HHSA — One Health Epidemiology Program — sandiegocounty.gov
Tracks reported animal bites countywide, including bites handled by San Diego Humane Society.
